Verrucae Treatment

Swift

The new revolutionary verrucae treatment using microwaves.

HOW DOES IT WORK? The microwave energy generates heat focused under the probe to target the wart/verruca.

DOES IT HURT? Pain levels vary from person to person but most undergoing Swift liken it to a pain similar to an injection or sharp scratch, lasting 2-3 seconds then quickly subsiding. No change will be apparent immediately after the treatment but after a few days you may notice a difference.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED AND WHAT DOES IT COST? A minimum of 3 treatments are required, at a cost of £100 per session. Treatment involves a 15 or 30 minute appointment at monthly intervals, each one consisting of several times bursts of microwaves, each a few seconds long.

CAN ANYONE RECEIVE THIS TREATMENT? With a few exceptions, most people with skin lesions would be able to have this treatment. You cannot receive this treatment if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker of if you have a metallic implant in your foot or ankle. Lesions on the hands can be treated.

WILL IT WORK? Warts and verrucae are difficult to get rid of in adults. No treatment is guaranteed to work, nor can it be guaranteed that Swift will be successful. However, the lesion size and/or level of pain may be reduced after the treatment even if the lesion has not completely resolved. Research has shown there is a 74% success rate but a more recent survey of 43 clinics has reported an 80% success rate, with 45% of cases being resolved in 3 treatments.

HOW DO MICROWAVES WORK? Microwave energy rapidly elevates tissue temperature and creates precise, localised cell destruction. Infected tissue can exist several millimetres below the surface and can often be difficult to treat using traditional methods, resulting in either untreated tissue or significant damage. Swift delivers a precise, highly controlled energy dose. As microwaves travel into the tissue, water molecules begin colliding and creating localised heat energy – quickly destroying all infected tissue with a predetermined path. In just seconds, the treatment is complete and the healing cascade begins immediately. Treated tissue is quickly replaced, repaired and regenerated..

Needling

Needling is the latest treatment for treating stubborn verrucae.

A research paper (Longhurst and Bristow, 2013) has shown a 69% resolution rate in 46 adults. This is a significant result when you consider that topical treatments have little effect at all.

Needling is performed under local anaesthetic with three or four injections around the ankle to ensure the foot is completely numb before proceeding.

Having established that the area to be treated has been completely anaesthetised a hypodermic needle is used to repeatedly puncture the verruca. This pushes verruca tissue from the epidermis through into the dermis and underlying adipose tissue layer. Once this painless process has been completed a simple dry dressing is applied. This must be kept dry for at least twenty four hours.

The anaesthetic will start to wear off in two to three hours, but do not be concerned if it takes a little longer as the effects vary from person to person. After forty eight hours showering is permitted and life can continue as normal. There may be some slight discomfort for the first couple of days and pain relief may be taken to ease this as long as it is not aspirin based. Patients have reported very little pain after treatment.

It can take 4 – 8 weeks for the immune system to destroy the verrucae. A second treatment may be necessary.
